Windows Vista Problems
Tags: Windows Vista
Windows Vista is claimed to be the most secure windows to date, well in way it is but if you read my Windows Firewal post you will see it is not. However what Microsoft has done, is denied you the main account who is part of the administrators account access to the most basic things. Lets take security on files and folders, after doing an upgrade for someone from Windows XP to Windows Vista. It seems to be a problem with folders that had been in the older XP version.
Lets take the old docuemtns and settings folder, this no longer exists in Windows Vista and is replaced by /users/username but the important thing is that if you have files in the old folder location they are not transfered to the new location.
Now although the old location still exists, I thought I would go in and manually move the files across myself. LOL, now the fun begins. Windows Vista has locked certain features from the user if they are not a full blown administrator, part of their new security features. So access to this folder was denied as the permission to access was not correct.
No big deal I thought, just take owner of the directory and reset the permissions. Yeah right, in the older XP you could apply all settings to files and folders that belonged to the one you had been modifying. Under Vista although this option exists, it doesn't work.
It made changes to some, but there were more files and folders that still would be denied access due to not having the right access. Stupid, considering I had told it to taker ownership and replace all permissions with the ones I had setup for it.
So what is the solution, to log in as the administrator. And of course Microsoft have disabled that account so you can't log in as the adminstrator. So the fun begins again.
Good on you Microsoft, you know how to piss your customers off.
