How do you protect your Laptop?

After reading a news report, were the victim was able to help police recover his own laptop. Got me to thinking about my own security, mainly my desktop. First if you haven't heard of this story, then please have a read. His venture certainly got his laptop back.

NY victim uses remote logon to nab theft suspect

Now I have mine switched off, for security reasons on both my laptop and desktop. With my desk top I have BitLocker software, using a USB key. With Windows Vista Ultimate, this is a great feature and was the main reason I wanted Ultimate.

Since getting my laptop from work, they use Windows Vista Business. I was a little disappointed to find that the people who would benefit the most from BitLocker, aren't included in this type of security.

For those who don't know what or how BitLocker works, the main way to use it is with a computer that has a motherboard that supports TPM. In a work environment that would be perfect, because with the added security for the network. It would mean that not only could the computer not be logged into. Any data on any of the drives can be protected from hacking as well.

Anyway I thought the news article was great, what is really needed is a unique GPS locator than could be switched on and configured, registered or something. Sorry thinking out loud.

  • Andrew Scott's Gravatar I had a quick look at that site Shannon, now I would need to read how it works fully. But I have a problem with software solutions, due to the fact that a stolen laptop would be very quickly reformatted and represented as second hand.

Sure there are times, like the news article I posted.

The one question I didn't mention before, that entered my head was how was the thief able to use the Operating System so easy?
