Windows Vista & UAC WTF?

After many months, well a year to be precise. I decided to switch UAC off so that I could install apache and php5 on my Vista 64bit.

Today being one of those days when I had some time to kill, I decided to watch a movie that was store on my external USB drive.

Now the fun has begun. Now correct me if I am wrong, but I took UAC to mean that there is no challenge for permissions or rights. Until Windows Media Player told me that the movie can't be played in this region. So out of curiosity I copied the movie to the internal HD and played it without any problems.

Ok, I thought what if I switch UAC back on. And low and behold I can watch the movie off the external HD again.

Is that one of the most stupidest thing I have ever seen, you bet.

  • Matt Woodward's Gravatar This has to do more with the nasty DRM that's embedded deep in the Vista kernel than it does with UAC. The UAC stuff has many, many other quirks you'll enjoy. ;-) My favorite is, with UAC off and logged in as Administrator, Vista telling me I can't save a file I had opened in a particular directory because I didn't have permission, but being able to save the file to the desktop and then drag it into that same directory it just told me I didn't have permissions on without any problems.

Vista's a real joy. Best of luck with it!
