ColdFusion Builder lacks 64bit support
Tags: Coldfusion
ColdFusion Builder beta 3 was released just recently and the one thing that keeps annoying me with Adobe, is the huge lack of support for 64bit machines.
Granted that this can run very happily in a 64bit version of Eclipse as a plug-in, the native standalone version will always be 100% 32bit.
However the one thing that is annoying is running 32bit version of software in a 64bit environment, so the number one question to ask Adobe now is how long is it going to be before we start getting native 64bit versions?
On Windows 64bit version running a 64 bit version of Eclipse, I can't tell you how fast this is. But once you start introducing 32 bit versions then it begins to drag your Eclipse to a halt. It is no secret that Flash currently has no 64bit version, and even though Adobe said 3 years ago one is in the pipeline, we are yet to see it.
So the question is do we ColdFusion developers have to wait for a 64bit version of ColdFusion Builder and a 64bit Flash 4 Builder?
I hope not, I would hope that during this lifecycle and before a 1.0 release on both these products we start to see a fully compatible 64bit version of both of these IDE's.

Funny you say that, because Adobe announced this week that they're completely dropping 32-bit for Premiere Pro and After Effects
http://www.adobe.com/products/premiere/faq/
"Adobe has decided that future versions of Adobe Premiere Pro and After Effects software will offer native support for 64-bit operating systems. Because 64-bit operating systems offer superior performance, future releases of these products will not be supported on 32-bit operating systems." -
I agree. I opened a discussion thread in the CFBuilder forums on this very topic back in early November. You can track it here:

Is there an official stance Adobe is taking on this subject? I personally do not mind running CFBuilder as a plugin on top of a fresh Java EE version of Eclipse. I have enough horsepower to run multiple instances of the Eclipse IDE at a given time but others may not be as fortunate.
However, I am noticing some issues with this approach especially when it comes to CFBuilder's ColdFusion perspective sharing the same "Servers" View as the Java EE perspective. I have a funny suspicion that this is what ultimately led to me receiving a "Your version of CFBuilder has expired." alert each time I try running Eclipse now after I attempted to install GlassFish.# Posted By Matthew Zimmer | 12/17/09 11:46 AM
