Windows 7 is this microsoft's way of pushing it's users away?

One of the things that has annoyed me is the attitude of the founder of Microsoft, since the begining Bill Gates has made it very public how he started Microsoft. And to this day the ramifications of this strategy, remains to be the dominating force that Microsoft now has on the market. With the up coming release of Windows 7, I have downloaded and been running it for a few months now. And from a user persepective, I find it very daunting that each release of the OS changes things around. Now as much as I can understand the need for things to move around and such, the annoying part is the company uses us as the guinea pigs and we keep forking out the money to upgrade. Why!!

Because most of us rely on the companies developing software that we use, and with the lack of the same functionality on other alternatives it makes it very daunting for the average user to make a huge informed decision on what to use.

Larger companies like Adobe, have made a small leap into releasing their products onto other platforms. And as the company made its entry into the market from the Mac side of the world, it does go to show that there is a market on the PC platform.

With that aside, there complexity of buying a PC or Mac should not be as scary as it is. And Microsoft just can't help themselves with the home market, or is it there way of making the money they need to force people to buy the more expensive versions of the Operating System.

When Vista was released here in Australia, the cost of the OS was almost double what you could buy it from the United States for Vista Ultimate. And sadly I don't see this changing either.

But for the majority of home users, who still use Windows XP there is going to come a time when they will be forced to upgrade. But the biggest issue I have is the amount of bugs and problems that Windows 7 has now fixed, yes it has at this stage introduced many more but this will have to wait till it is released to see how much is actually fixed.

And I am in the opinion that Windows 7, is more cosmetic to me than it is new features. And should have been a Service Pack Release rather than a full blown release.

A couple of the most unwanted bugs that I have come across is when you have a Digital tuner in your Vista Ultimate edition. When the time comes to either the end or even the begining of Daylight savings, Windows Media center takes it upon itself to not only adjust the time of your PC to the correct time, but it takes any scheduled programs and adds an hour to the recording time.

So if you like to watch NCIS here on a tuesday at 8.30pm, dont expect it to begin recording till 9.30pm. No matter how many times this has been reported as a bug it has never been fixed since Windows Media Centre was released.

A smaller but even more annoying bug, and if you like to tinker with the OS then you will notice that there is a serious improvement to many other areas of the way the system works. One of these is when you actually add / remove components to the OS, the time it takes to bring the list up can take upto 5 mins on my system.

Yet in Windows 7, this seems to take seconds or at the most I have seen it take 20secs.

Another most annoying problem with Windows Vista is the amount of times Explorer crashes, and please note here that I refere to Explorer and not Internet Explorer. But if you make small chnages to your task bar, like extending the quick launch and arranging the icons to be in a group to suit you, when it Windows Explorer crashes you can kiss that small tweak good bye.

And the amount of times it crashes is enough to be pulling your hair out, and say to yourself never again.

So far Windows 7 looks fairly rock solid, but I will not be forking out the cash to upgrade to it either. Why, because so far I dont see anything in Windows 7 that I would use on a daily basis that could not have been releases as a Service Pack like they have done with Windows XP.

Problem is I know people will upgrade, and I guess Microsoft knows this too.

  • Andrew Scott's Gravatar @James - first things first. I said I would not be upgrading to Windows 7, and that I am currently running Vista Ultimate. So why would I stick with something that I am NOT running?

Secondly, I do run and prefer to use Ubuntu 8.10 over Windows Vista. However as I am a huge World of Warcraft fanatic, it just doesnt work too well on Ubuntu even with the huge support for the 3rd party software to allow me to run it.

Thirdly, there are some programs that I can only run in Windows Vista and not Linux. And until the support of these applications are at a stage to run or be competitive then I will be using Ubuntu more and more.

Till then I have to switch between Operating Systems to do my work and have the enjoyment that will satisfy me.
