IE8 Compatibility mode is it worth anything to future development?

First lets look at why Microsoft introduced this feature into IE8, and in the words of Microsoft.

"In a nutshell, Compatibility View allows content designed for older web browsers to still work well in Internet Explorer 8"

However this is not the case at all.

In a current project where the project ran fine in IE7 and IE8, but as soon as the user would put the browser into computability mode it refused to work. In the end the fix was very simple, but what is not simple is that according to Microsoft this mode is suppose to allow older content to run in IE8.

Yet this was a typical example where this doesn't happen at all, and it actually made what did work in older browsers not work in IE8 at all.

So the question that I ask here, should we as a developer continue to support something that just ends up causing us more grief in the first place?
