Web Forms hang when working on local machine, AVG Anti Virus to blame

Having the time to finally sit down and seriously look into a problem I had noticed, I was able to eventually find that the problem was not what I thought it was.

For sometime now I had been noticing an ever increasing amount of forms, hanging on any website that I was working on locally. At first I had thought that the problem was with the website and began placing logging information around every line of code on the forms, only to find nothing being logged.

So as all the sites I work on are now ColdBox related sites, I had noticed that none if its logs when switched on had been occurring either, weird to say the least.

So the next step was to investigate the log files of IIS itself, as I thought that it might have been a bad rule in my rewrite rules for URL, only to find that it wasn't that either. So I did some research in Google, and searched high and low for problems and found one very obscure post on a forum that sounded similar to what I had been having.

The only problem was that it had seen it with SSL sites, and it was about a certain feature of AVG. So armed with that I decided to test the waters, and switched off the following parts of AVG and began my testing again.

  • Link Scanner
  • Identity Protection
  • Online shield

Low and behold I stopped having the issue.

I have no idea as to what is actually happening here, but from what I can tell from other posts I did come across, was that AVG injects some JS to help with the protection. Now the thing to note here is that this is only a problem that I have discovered to sites that are running on the same machine as AVG, as another server I have doesn't experience the problems.

Now I did try to isolate which one of these components of AVG is causing the issue, but the best I could establish was that they all create the problem.

I thought I would put it out there as this is a very popular Anti Virus, and one of the best that I have ever used, but this is not something that I would consider to keep off for any extended period of time, especially if you want to keep total protection.

Anyway I just wanted to let others who might comes across this, a point of call that there is a problem, and that these are the culprits that I have identified as the problem, and hopefully this can be something that AVG can fix really quickly.
