Flash Builder 4 and problems with 64bit eclipse versions

For the last few months I was not able to install Flash Builder into any of my Eclipse instances, and today I found out why that is the case.

Change of host providers

This is just  a very quick post.

ColdFusion Builder its pros and cons upon final version

I would dare say that the product will be release sometime around June 2010, we all know that the last public release was Beta 3. And as it hasn't reached a Release candidate as yet, it would be safe to say that it is about 4+ months away from a release.

But what will its pros and cons be upon release?

Adobe, Apple debate on Flash on Apple devices

Since the release of the new Apple iPad, people have continued to raise their disappointment in the fact that Flash won't run on these devices.

Are Adobe really that worried?

Is ColdFusion dead, Adobe says no

Every now and then the rumour mill starts with people saying that ColdFusion is Dead, and if Adobe has anything to say about it the application called ColdFusion will survive. Adobe has made a very committed road map to integrate a lot of their products, ColdFusion is in essence a core piece of this plan.

However there is something that we all can not ignore, and will Adobe address this or leave it by the wayside?

Adobe has egg on their face

I guess by now it is very common knowledge that Adobe must be feeling embarrassed by the latest shipment of ColdFusion 9 DVD's.

cfajaxproxy and a common gotcha

One of the best things that was introduced into ColdFusion was the cfAjaxProxy tag, however I would like to add that to the unwary there is a very huge gotcha. And can make for debugging a little hard.

To close our tags or to not close our tags

It seems that an interesting debate about this within the ColdFusion community, sees that more people don't see the actual reason why it should be done.

Let me explain some more.

When is Internet Explorer not Internet Explorer

Well I think it was only a matter of time before this happened, and might push the stick right up...

Well it would be nice anyway..

Using Ajax in ColdFusion is simpler than most people think

I thought I would post this very quick Ajax tutorial and how easy it is to use, without using any extra frameworks or JavaScript libraries that don't already come with ColdFusion.

Do you have an iPod, does it get hot? You might not be alone.

It seems that Apple has done almost everything it can to keep this as quiet as possible, and it appear that they will even try to sue you if you accept a refund as compensation. Asking that you say nothing, or face litigation if you do.

Do you use a Mac, are you sure you are not compromised?

One of the things that the Windows platform has over the Apple Mac's, is that the hackers go where there is more chance to get what they need.

But is that attitude going to be something that Apple can ignore?

Australian TV station gets a kick in the butt

I guess most people would have heard by now that IceTV an Australian company in Sydney, has won a case that should make the TV stations maybe wake up to the fact that they can no longer do business in the past.

Hell if anything should or could be learned by the Global Financial down turn that has transpired, the old school of thinking just doesn't work any more.

When is a search engine no longer effective?

The short answer is when it doesn't know how to follow new data.

Twitter virus shows up called StalkDaily

It has been reported that a website called stalkdaily.com has been making the rounds.

Opensource CFML Engines and what it means to the Community

I have kept rather on the fence for awhile on this subject for a number of reasons, one of those was I was interested to see how others would begin writing about the impact it might have on the CFML community as a whole.

The one thing that we can not argue is that the future of CFML is NOT going to die, provided that the language heads in the direction that Adobe should have been taking it 10 years ago.

Australian Govt to build national broadband network

This is extremely good news to those of us here in Australian, and the one thing that the government should never have done in the first place when selling of the Communication company to the private sector, was to keep control of the infrastructure side of it.

Another funny side to the world of twitter

They say a picture is worth a thousand words, and sometimes it is just priceless.

Free Flex 3 license round 2 USA now follows the UK lead

Well it seems that everyone is blogging how Adobe is giving away a free Flex 3 license to unemployed developers, and I am not going to jump on that same bandwagon.

Deploying an Encrypted ColdBox Application and a gotcha

I currently run my on a shared hosting provider and felt that it was time that I actually encrypted the source files, I added some extra logic to my Ant build.xml to take care of this and as I had used it in the past I never expected any problems with this.

However I was dead wrong with that assumption.

My Impressions of Windows 7

When it was publically available for download I grabbed a copy as soon as I could, and installed it fairly quickly to have a look at what it was like. And to describe it as over whelming to begin with was maybe not the best way to describe it, however I never really used it for awhile.

After having a conversation with an old work colleague who has come to also love it some, I decided to begin installing some applications on it and began to use it some more.

Auto Scrolling Parallax Effect in CSS

I am probably really going to be showing my age here, but when I first started programming in the days of the Commodore Vic 20 and Commodore 64. One of the things that used to blow us away was the ability to take images and parallel scroll them, back then it was a case of the wow factor as it wasn't really a big thing.

Version control database schema the SQL Compare way from Red-Gate

In my last post on Version Control Database Schema I spoke about how you can use the build.xml file to recreate you database from the generate schemas, since then I have been chatting with their Product Manager David Atkinson. One of the major problems I had with the last method was the fact that it failed with dependencies and constraints, and usually had to modify the order of the SQL files until it would not error.

David showed me something that I wasn't aware of and made it a little more automated in the process.

Version control your SQL Server with Red-Gate SQL Tools

Today I am going to explain how to use Red-Gate's Compare tool to compare a database with a folder, in which you can then use to store in your version control system.

RSS Feeds will now be using Feed Burner

This is just a very quick post to let people know that as of yesterday I have moved all my feeds over to Feed Burner, in the next few days I will be switching off the old RSS feed from the website. So what does that mean to current subscribers?

At least for the next few days nothing, however after Friday 2nd of April the old RSS feed will be removed from the website in favour of the Feed Burner. So if you have subscribed to the site with the old one, please take the time to resubscribe to the new RSS Feed.

Calling all entrepreneurs - introducing PitchTV

Companies are slow with recognising word of mouth

Well this is nothing new that we haven't really know for a very long time, but what is fascinating about this story below is that it just might wake these larger corporations up some.

Windows 7 and a nice little gem - Problem Steps Reporter

One of the things that is sometimes hard when dealing with support, is trying to understand what the user does to create an error or problem. The hardest part for us trying to deal with these customers is always the same, trying to understand what they mean when they actually are not sure what they are trying to describe.

So that brings us to this little gem.

Conficker Worm

This maybe old news for most, but as I really only saw it on the news today I thought I would write a quick blog about it anyway.

Blue Dragon open source almost 12 months later

Well it is 12 months now since New Atlanta announced that they were open sourcing their J2EE version of BlueDragon, since then a lot of discussions on the future of their product and CFML in a whole had sparked some heated discussions since the announcement.

It was a very brave move for New Atlanta to decide to make that decision, and most people that I have spoken to over the last 12 months were under the impression that it was for selfish reasons. Since then it has been more than for selfish reasons.

Application development and testing your code

Today I am going to touch on a subject that can all too importantly be overlooked, and regardless of whether it is open source or paid work there is an importance to releasing your code as bug free as you possibly can. I spent today trying to figure out why something that I had been using for a few years, had all of a sudden stopped working. I had patched this open source application to the newest version, which was about 5 versions ahead of what I was using.

When I began running a few tests on the patch before making it live, there was some very noticeable problems with the update. It just would no longer work in any way, and I noticed some very disturbing problems in the code that I had to ask the developer in question if they had done any testing on these changes. So without going into too much detail, I am going to use a few examples that will highlight the problem that I discovered in this case.

Microsoft can you get anything right, part 2!!

Well it seems I am on a role today with Microsoft, and after playing with Windows 7 for sometime now. I decided to migrate some settings from Vista, over to Windows 7 so that I could begin to use it more efficently.

But I discovered a flaw that made me laugh. In my previous post on the subject title, I discovered that even the most simplest of things don't get tested when streaming albums over to the Xbox 360.

Now I discovered a Windows easy transfer problem, that just makes that last statement even more so.

Microsoft can you get anything right?

Well after having a marathon session, ripping all my cd's over to my HD to be streamed to the Xbox 360. I was annoyed to find that the Xbox 360 has a major flaw that neither the Windows Media player, nor the Playstation 3 seem to suffer from.

Australian Government to crack down on Corporate Pay

I have to say that after watching the events unfold with the AIG debacle, I was surprised to see that the Australian Government has began to take this a bit more serious.

That's not to say that the Australian Government wasn't taking it serious, it just means that we as the public can now begin to see something happening.

How can a company justify cutting jobs

It was announced today that the ANZ bank will drop 500 of its back office workers in Australia and shift the jobs to India by the end of the year.

I can certainly appreciate a company wanting to save money, but not when it risks their reputation while they do it. And banks at the moment have a very bad reputation to begin with, they are organizations that exist for pure profit only. The bigger the profit the bigger the bonuses these fat cats receive.

Corporate greed and the downside to their greed

For those of you who don't live in Australia and haven't heard, we have a very large corporate company called Pacific brands. This company has got a lot of publicity all for the wrong reasons, and maybe in the long run for the right reasons as well.

Windows 7 is this microsoft's way of pushing it's users away?

One of the things that has annoyed me is the attitude of the founder of Microsoft, since the begining Bill Gates has made it very public how he started Microsoft. And to this day the ramifications of this strategy, remains to be the dominating force that Microsoft now has on the market.

Merry Xmas to all and a happy new year

Well its the time to be joyful, and festive. So from myself I would like to wish everyone a very merry xmas, and a happy new year.

Bank Fees and the Economic Greed

I guess by now you would guess that on a global level the world is headed for extreme trouble, the problem is the current Economic greed of all financial institutions.

Nobody can blame them for having to answer to their share holders, but that is the problem. It is becasue they do have to answer to their shareholders, when the greed factor highlights the fact that they are in it to make money and your not of any real interest.

Gone are the days when personal service, was just that personal. With the advent of computers, large corporations have laid of thousands of people and for what.

Coldfusion IDE Codenamed Bolt

Well I think by now and unless you have been hiding under a rock, you would have all heard about the new IDE codenamed Bolt.

So what is Bolt, well at the moment not 100% sure. However what I can speculate on is what Adobe might have planned.

How do you protect your Laptop?

After reading a news report, were the victim was able to help police recover his own laptop. Got me to thinking about my own security, mainly my desktop.

We as developers, should look outside the box

Well the title for this one was a little hard to describe, but sort of fits this.

Anyway one of the things that I have seen all too often in the mailing lists, is can I get such and such or there is a question regarding comparing a couple of products.

Don't get me wrong, if I could do it in ColdFusion I would too. But the reality is that ColdFusion really has no standard to coding, frameworks are all different so integration can always be a pain in the butt.

Adding Comments

Just a quick one, sorry to those who tried to add comments.

It was due to the fact I took out the comments and captcha support from Coldfusion, and will go back to my previous solution shortly.

If you have any problems please send and email to andrews with my domain.

Windows fails to boot, can one recover the data

The answer will always be yes, provided that the HD has not been erased with security in mind.

Well a few weeks ago, I was given a laptop to use and I do not know what I did. But it refused to boot anymore, and restoring from original CD was not an option.

It appears that Windows Vista, locked the Hard drive from further use.

So what did I do!

Hosting A to Z (hosting service provider)

First let me say that I am going to be extremely angry with what I write here, more out of frustration than anything else.

So feel free to read on, but please be warned.

Little Johnny strikes again

Well it has been awhile since a good johnny joke has surfaced, and this one posted on Coldfusion community list by Erica L. Walker was no exception to having a great laugh.

New site and new look

In the last 2 years I have been wanting to make the look of my blog, to be a little more exciting than the default blog style that I used.

The Evangelist and the Pastor

Courtesy of Larry Lyons (CF Community) and his source, this joke was too funny not to pass on.

An evangelist and a pastor are out hunting, when suddenly, out of nowhere, a grizzly bear appears. They sprint back to their hut as fast as they can, with the bear in close pursuit. The evangelist gets there first and pulls open the door. The pastor goes hurtling inside with the bear right behind, whereupon the evangelist slams the door shut from the outside. There is an anguished cry as the pastor screams "What are you doing?" To which the evangelist replies: "I just bring them in - once they're inside, they're your responsibility!"

What is code refactoring, in plain english?

In my last post I spoke about code refactoring, I did not stop to realise that some people would not know what this means.

The question is, when do we actually stop!!

Website is moving

This is just a short note to let people know that I will be moving my site to a new server, the main benefits I am hoping is that I can have a more stable server. Aside from the fact that I will also be running on a Coldfusion 8 Server, I can leverage of some of the new features.

Anyway, this should only be a small downtime. No delegation needs to take place, just will be down while we move the database and site.

Enterprise 2.0 needs a Social Collaboration Layer

Well the time has come, most of you know that I have been talking about a product that we (Aegeon) have been working on.

Coldfusion 64bit Connectors

How much longer is Adobe planning on keeping us 64bit users in suspense, I think that it is about time that they helped us out here.

RIA - Is it internet or interactive

While reading a blog from Scott Barnes, he makes a very good point on the compelling evidence of the shift the world has taken in the last 5 years.

He questions whether we should be calling RIA, Rich Interactive Applications or Rich Internet Applications.

What makes Good Open Source Software

Awhile ago I made some very strong opinions against a Content Management System written in Coldfusion, and even though the developers and people who support the product are great developers. It shows a lack of foresight and direction that Open Source Software needs to adopt to survive.

Poking Fun At Microsoft Surface

Sometimes when you take a back step to something, you usually get to see things in a different light.

Microsoft Surface

While everyone was focused on Silverlight and Apollo

Well it is no surprise that while everyone was talking and focusing on the these 2 technologies, something else has slipped passed us.

Eclipse hidden gem

Or maybe its not..

While doing some work on a project the other day, I actually hit compare against local history. Now I had see this here a number of times, only this time I clicked it by accident.

Lord of the Rings

Ever since reading the book when I was 10 years old, I have been fasinated by the world that J.R.R Tolkin created and when I heard about a new online game in beta for this world I signed up.

Response from Microsoft

I got a response from MS today on the issue I raised with them over the price difference between all the countries, it appears that unless you are in the USA everywhere else is overpriced.

Anyway here is M$'s response, followed by some comments buy me.

Windows Vista Pricing

Well I took the plunge and installed Vista on a seperate partition, and will evaluate the program till the 30 days is up.

But there is one thing that bothers me, the price of the program.

My Animated World

I came across this link today, and I was curious enough to have a look and see what it was all about. And for thos of you who are old enough to recall then you might find this as funny as I did.

Merry Xmas and a happy new year

Well it is that time of year again.

Amazing Talent

Sometimes great talent just needs to be seen to be believed, and this guy really is great.

Video of Jerome Murat performance

Light hearted joke

A man goes into a pet shop to buy a parrot. The shop owner points to three identical looking parrots on a perch and says, "the parrot on the left costs 500 dollars". "Why does the parrot cost so much," asks the man. The shop owner says, "well, the parrot knows how to use a computer".

The man then asks about the next parrot to be told that this one costs 1,000 dollars because it can do everything the other parrot can do plus it knows how to use the UNIX operating system.

Naturally, the increasingly startled man asks about the third parrot to be told that it costs 2,000 dollars. Needless to say this begs the question, "What can it do?" To which the shop owner replies, "to be honest I have never seen it do a thing, but the other two call him boss!"

When is a virus not a virus?

So I have to ask this question, and the answer is simple when it is the virus protector spreading itself.

This caused a headache that is for sure.

Top 20 replies by programmers when their programs don't work

My boss sent this onto us programmers, and I am not sure if he was trying to tell us something or not. Anyway I think it's hilariously true, as much as I don't want to admit it:-)

20. "That's weird..."

19. "It's never done that before."

18. "It worked yesterday."

17. "How is that possible?"

16. "It must be a hardware problem."

15. "What did you type in wrong to get it to crash?"

14. "There is something funky in your data."

13. "I haven't touched that module in weeks!"

12. "You must have the wrong version."

11. "It's just some unlucky coincidence."

10. "I can't test everything!"

9. "THIS can't be the source of THAT."

8. "It works, but it hasn't been tested."

7. "Somebody must have changed my code."

6. "Did you check for a virus on your system?"

5. "Even though it doesn't work, how does it feel?

4. "You can't use that version on your system."

3. "Why do you want to do it that way?"

2. "Where were you when the program blew up?"

1. "It works on my machine"

In this world something can be free

We live in a world of open source or freeware.

Freeware they still expect you to pay at some point if you liekj what you like, although not a strict policy of forcing this. Open source, it is 100% free and open to bugs and such but can be easily updated or fixed by you or I and made as a contribution to the open source product.

I have been a long time Symantec user, was blind to the fact that their antivirus and firewalls where top notch, which I will say they are but to drag the performance of the computer down is no longer acceptable to me.

So when my subscription expired I went looking.

And I came across these guys, Comodo these guys have a range of products that are free.

An why is it that they are free?

These guys sell certificates for the internet, and to make themselves more aware in the market place they took a stance that many would not think off. Lets offer free a virus protector and firewall etc., and let me tell you this.

I have been around firewalls a long time, and nothing has ver come to this when it comes to software firewalls. It can give you the piece of mind you are looking for. So give it a try, and see for yourself.

Not much happening

I had been planning to start doing a bit more ajax blogs on using dojo, but due to some time constraints and going live with a website this week, my time has been a bit limited.

Anyway I still plan to write up some articles on dojo, and how you can fit it into Coldfusion as well.

Real Life Godzilla

This morning I received an email, that showed a very talented 11 year old singer.

Now I have recieved another with something that made me really stand up and laugh, this was absolutely brilliant. I want to know how this guy did this, it left me speechless.

The Real Life Godzilla

This is really, really fantastic

I am really speechless with this girl, at 11 years old she sings like she has been singing for years.

I will leave you to make up your mind.

Amazing 11 year old singer
